Jill Smith is an artist currently based in Toronto, Ontario. She works with an aesthetic that combines figurative allusions with domestic surroundings. By abstracting motifs of the domestic, and blending them with illustrative and organic shapes, her work explores our relationship to constructed and decorated environments. Pastel colours, forms, and patterns are combined within her sculptures and screen prints, to develop whimsical arrangements that often are suggestive of still life and bodily vessels. Smith's work stimulates the imagination by translating space and object-memory into active, nonsensical environments that ask the viewer to reconsider their personal surroundings.
